How to have a healthy picnic

Eating outside in summer with the kids is a no brainer - a chance to get some fresh air, enjoy the sunshine and let the crumbs fall on the ground rather than the kitchen floor for once!

It’s easy to make a healthy picnic with a little bit of planning.

Here are some ideas to help you:

  • Chop up some fresh veggies and serve them with a dip - cucumbers, carrots and red peppers are all good for scooping up a dip.
  • If you want to make your own dip try our healthy hummus.
  • Muffins don’t have to be sweet - try these savoury butternut squash muffins or check out the recipe video on our You Tube channel.
  • Bring some fresh fruit - most kids love snacking on fruit - watermelon always goes down particularly well on a hot day.
  • Have a go at making your own kale crisps.
  • Picnic food doesn’t have to be cold - try heating up leftovers, putting them in a flask and bringing them along to a picnic. Pasta, rice, stews and soup can all be eaten on the go.
  • Make a few salads and take them along in a Tupperware box. You might like this bean and corn salad or perhaps this ruby salad. Alternatively a pasta salad with your child’s favourite veggies in should go down well.
  • Pastry is a handy way to serve up some veggies - veggie sausage rolls, empanadas, pasties, patties - make your own at home and freeze any leftovers for a future picnic or lunchbox.
  • For a healthy sweet treat you could give these carrot cake energy balls a try - they’re fun to make with the kids too.
