Community Cafe

Taste your way around the world every Monday lunchtime

What else do we do with surplus donated food at Healthy Living Platform?

We cook it up into tasty, healthy and affordable lunches that we serve at our Community Café on Brixton Road.

And there’s a twist. Each week we bring you cuisines from different parts of the world.

Get your taste buds singing to the tune of a nourishing, low-cost meal. Join us every Monday from 12.30 to 1.30pm.

How does it work?

  • No need to book

  • Turn up on Monday at 12.30 lunchtime

“This is excellent, we need more low-cost cafes for ordinary people. So many places have been gentrified and price local people out of social activities, pushing them into isolation. There is enough surplus food to feed communities great food with dignity.”

Questions?

What kind of food do you offer?

We cook up quality surplus food, kindly donated by our partners. Each week we aim to surprise you with a different dish from around the world.

Can I volunteer to help in the café?

Yes, absolutely. There are lots of ways to volunteer with HLP. First, we ask you to fill in our simple form and we’ll get back to you.

Is surplus food safe to eat?

Yes. Most food is as fresh as what you find in the shops. But sometimes, surplus food may have passed or be close to passing its best before date. These dates are a guide to quality only.

Use-by or expiration dates on the other hand, are about food safety. We do not offer food that has passed its use by date as this could be harmful to health and is against the law.

What is surplus food?

In the UK, 6.7 million tonnes of food is wasted a year to make more room for new stock because shops and businesses over-order. Surplus food can be fresh, frozen or long-life cupboard items.

Do you cater for community groups?

If you are a community group, local to 336 and interested in a low cost lunch for your group, please get in touch: Anna.Sjovorr@healthylivingplatform.org
