Black History Month Events

Black History Month has been celebrated in the UK for more than 30 years. It was originally founded in order to celebrate the contribution that people of African and Caribbean backgrounds have made to the UK over past generations.

It has now expanded to include the history of Black people from all around the world.

Here at the Healthy Living Platform this month we will be celebrating with a number of exciting events, kicking off with a live cookalong with one of our members. Adelaide will be teaching us how to make Angolan bean soup.

The cookalong will take place on Zoom on Wednesday 7 October at 12pm. FIND OUT MORE AND REGISTER HERE.

Black History Month will continue with a series of further events taking place every Wednesday at 12pm. Each week a different member will host an interactive online session, in which they will be looking at story-telling through food, exploring how recipes have changed through generations, the history of different herbs and spices and live cook-alongs.

We will also be celebrating Black History Month in the following ways:

  • engaging with Black children and young people to talk about their futures
  • a live session looking at Afro-Caribbean herbs and spices
  • the Healthy Living Kitchen will be cooking recipes inspired by African, Caribbean or Afro-Latino cuisine for the whole month - we started with a vegan Cuban picadillo
  • a Black history scavenger hunt in Brixton
  • The Big Soup - an event for young people

We'll be sharing further information about these events soon but please email info@healthylivingplatform.org if you'd like to get involved at this stage.
