Top energy saving cooking tips from our new food ambassadors

We have just reached the end of another 4 week food ambassador course. Participants shared dishes from their different cultures, including Egyptian kosheri, Caribbean stew with yam and chow chow, Jerk mushrooms and chickpea stew, healthy sweet potato chocolate brownies.

We had to share this lovely quote, one food ambassador Marsha put on her social media: ‘It has been a great learning experience for me personally on many levels. Cooking with fresh produce every week and cooking dishes from other cultures has also been a real gem, But most importantly the beauty of everyone sharing knowledge and coming together as one has been priceless’.

The course covers a host of topics, from cooking a balanced meal, reading food labels, batch cooking and cooking together in a more environmentally friendly way.  In our last session our food ambassadors came up with these fantastic top energy saving cooking tips:

  • Only use the amount of water you need when boiling the kettle

  • Turn off all appliances when not in use

  • Keep a list of the contents of your fridge and freezer so you don’t have to keep opening them

  • To save gas, use the smaller ring on the hob and don’t turn it up too high.

  • Make sure your hob is clean so that it works properly

  • Try not to fill your freezer to the top as this uses more energy

  • Batch cook - for example a big pot of stew to last a few meals, or portions for the freezer

  • Fill your oven up and turn it off 10 minutes early as it will still be warm enough to continue cooking the food.  See this recent article in the guardian for more oven tips)

  • Use all of the veg and don’t throw out any food!
